Popular Spring Insects

Common Winter Pests in Sacramento

Spring is just a few short weeks away, and with it comes the return of pests. Here in Sacramento, there are certain insects that are known for coming back around in the springtime. Now that we are going to be seeing more of them, it’s good to know which pests you need to keep an eye out for. In today’s blog post, we’re going to cover some of the popular spring insects that you can count on seeing in the next couple of weeks.

Boxelder Bugs

As you may have guessed, boxelder bugs are going to be found around boxelder trees. Though their name does suggest a specific type of tree, these bugs can be found around other types of greenery as well and thrive in leafy areas. These bugs have a dark gray body with bright red stripes running down their bodies. One of the reasons that they love greenery is that it provides them with the climate that they need to thrive.

Whether it’s the brisk mornings or heightened temperatures, boxelder bugs will often try to find a way into your home to protect themselves and maintain their temperature. The good news is, they’re not dangerous pests to come across. They aren’t going to do any damage to your home and they won’t pose any danger to your family. In reality, they’re more of a nuisance than anything else.

Ants

One of the pests that people see most commonly during the springtime are ants. Though they are small, they can be mighty in large numbers. The most common reason that ants are found in a home is because there was some type of food source that they followed in inside. While there may be ants inside of your home, it’s more than likely that they’re bringing food that they find back to their colony outside.

Ants build their colonies in the ground, taking the formation of a small hill. In this hill, there are hundreds of ants that are working together to keep the colony going. While ants are not a dangerous pest to come across, red ants (also known as fire ants) are known for biting. If you come across an anthill and notice that it’s red ants living inside of it, take caution.

Cluster Flies

While it’s not the common house fly, cluster flies are very close in resemblance and equally as annoying to have to deal with. They are extremely common in the spring and summer months and can be found in large swarms. More often than not, cluster flies can be found in attics, drawn to the light that’s coming through cracks.

The challenging thing about cluster flies is that they often lie dormant in the walls of a home and will become active when the temperatures start to go up. Eventually, the flies will work on exiting the house through any cracks or openings that they have available. The best way to reduce the chances of cluster flies in the first place is by sealing up any cracks or openings in your home.

Taking the extra time to tend to these openings and accessible entranceways that these pests have can make a big difference in whether or not you see cluster flies this spring and in the springs of years to come.

Beetles

Spring is known for plants and trees coming back from their winter hiatus, and that means that the insects that thrive from greenery will come back too. Beetles are an insect that will linger around greenery and try to work their way into your home when they’re in need of some extra warmth. They can also head into the home when they’re not getting enough food to thrive.

Unfortunately, one of the worst parts about beetles is that they can quickly turn into an infestation if they go without care. If you notice any beetles that are inside of your home, it’s good to reach out to your local pest control company so that you can determine whether or not an infestation is something that you need to worry about.
