Most Common Pests in Office Building

As the owner of a commercial space, the last thing that you want to hear about are pests that have somehow made a home in your space. Though that may be the case, it’s not uncommon for office spaces to have a couple of different types of pests within their space.

The team at Earthwise Pest Management has been lucky enough to provide the Sacramento area with high-quality pest control services. In our blog post today, we’re going to touch on a few of the most common pests that are found in office buildings so that you know what to look out for.

Mice

There’s no doubt about it; mice are one of the most common pests that commercial building owners have to deal with. From the foot traffic that these types of buildings get to the ease of a mess that comes with them, these big open buildings are prone to mice. More often than not, these buildings back alleyways or are close to busy city streets — these are the exact types of areas where mice are going to be running around and looking for a place to call home and some food to eat.

As the owner of a commercial space, you need to make sure that you’ve hired a quality cleaning staff to ensure that any and all leftover food scraps are picked up and that there are no potential spaces that a mouse would like to call home. You’ll also want to have your staff do routine cleaning of their desks because these are the ideal places for mice to make a home.

There are a few different giveaways that there are mice in your building, the first one is going to be droppings. Mice droppings are small and will usually be found in dark spaces or areas that often have food. You could notice them on desktops, on the ground, and really just about anywhere. You may also notice that there are some food items that have been chewed on a little. This is another clear sign that there are mice, or some other type of pest, in your building.

In the case that you do find mice in your building, make sure that you get the problem taken care of immediately because mice are one of the pests that, if not taken care of, can quickly turn into an infestation.

Silverfish

For some, out of sight out of mind is a fine relationship to have with the insects in their building, and silverfish are one of the many that this is already likely the case with. Silverfish are extremely small insects, and they are nocturnal, so many business owners will never realize when they have them in their office. These insects feed off of book bindings, pieces of paper, fabrics and the like — so if you have just about any type of fibrous material (which what isn’t going to be considered a good meal for a silverfish), there’s a risk that you could wind up with an infestation.

As we mentioned earlier, these pests are nocturnal, so it can be difficult to recognize that you have a silverfish problem at all. If you do notice that there are bite marks or remnants of a pest on any book bindings or materials in your office, call a professional and have them check to see if you have a pest problem.

This is another pest that can be avoided with routine cleaning and quality maintenance in a space. Though these insects are harmless and can be a challenge to even notice in the first place, it’s always good to get them taken care of sooner than later if you do notice them in your commercial building.

Ants

Similar to mice, ants are an insect that requires the remains of our food to survive. Many people learned that leaving crumbs was one of the easiest ways to gain ants in a space, but there are still many people that don’t clean up after themselves and make an office space a prime location for ants to feast. If you have a cafeteria in your commercial space or there are people that eat within the space, there is a chance of ants making their way in.

Given that these insects are tiny, it could be difficult to feel as though there is an infestation of ants within your space — but there very well may be! One of the best things that you can do to avoid ants from making their way in is to keep your office space as clean as possible and ensure that the trash is removed on a routine basis so that there is little to no chance of any ants finding a food source in your commercial building. As long as you stay on top of the cleaning, there’s a very little chance that you’ll ever have ants in the first place.
