Mosquito Management: Finally Telling Them To Buzz Off

One of the worst feelings in the world is when you’re sitting on a log camping, and hearing that ominous buzzing sound slowly coming towards you. Well, that is a bad feeling, but there is one feeling that’s worse, and that is sitting on that log knowing that you have the same mosquito issue at home.

Stop letting yourself get bit by mosquitos when you’re camping and when you’re at home. Here are some tips on how to tell the mosquitoes to buzzzzzzzz off.

Natural Remedies

What have you always done when you were getting bitten by mosquitoes? Your answer is most likely going inside or applying bug spray.  Luckily that isn’t your only option, although good ol’ bug spray still does work. There are plenty of natural remedies that you can make yourself, as scrutinized as they are.

Substances like picaridin, lemon, eucalyptus oil, and apple cider vinegar are said to act as a natural repellent when rubbed on the skin. While some methods are recognized by the CDC, there are some more outlandish ideas for natural mosquito repellant like eating slivered garlic. Garlic breath might repel more than just mosquitoes though.

How To Get Your Yard Back

If you have a cloud of mosquitoes in your backyard, you might want to look into ways to get rid of them besides going outside.

  • One of the most important things that you can do to get rid of mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding ground. Mosquitoes need standing water to reproduce, so if you have a pond on your property, you can drain it or install a fountain to create water flow.
  • There are also certain plants that mosquitoes don’t like, and we think they would look great in your yard. Marigolds, asters daisies, chrysanthemums, basil, anise, and coriander all repel mosquitoes, look at all those options!
  • One small bat can eat up to 600 mosquitoes a night, so why don’t you throw a bat box up on the tree above your new fountain!
  • Lastly, you could get a citronella candle. While they aren’t really proven to work, the smoke will keep the mosquitoes at bay.

If You Do Get Bit: Mosquito Bite Remedies

A mosquito bite constricts the surface layer of your skin, making that iconic looking volcano shaped bump on your skin.  And to make it worse, it will start to itch. Although the bite swelling is inevitable, there are ways to remedy the itch!

  • Topical creams
  • Lemon juice
  • Garlic paste
  • White vinegar

While these topical solutions may make the bump itch less, isn’t it better to just not get bitten in the first place? If you really want them gone, call an exterminator!
