Some of the most famous and beloved superheroes are named after the very pests we despise and try to keep out of our homes and yards. As a matter of fact, some of them are even pests themselves.

There are popular and well-known superheroes named after pests, Spider-Man comes to mind. But there are also many lesser-known superheroes who are named after pests, some you may have never heard of before.

Batman

In 1939, Batman hit the scene and quickly became popular. More than 70 years later, Batman remains one of the most popular comic book characters. It seems that there are a lot of fans of a rich man who dresses like a bat and fights crime.

The Tick

The Tick was made famous from his 1994 Saturday morning cartoon series. But The Tick actually got his start as the mascot of a newsletter put together by a local comic book shop.

The Tick is a weird dude wearing a weird tick costume, he has a very muscular body and large, square jaw. He has no memory of how he became The Tick, it is thought that it came about after taking several blows to the head.

The Green Hornet

You may not have heard about the Green Hornet, but perhaps your parents or grandparents have. He is one of the more popular characters from the pre-Superman era. The Green Hornet was a newspaper publisher by day and a crime-fighting superhero at night.

His weapon of choice is a gun that shoots knock-out gas, he has Black Beauty, a beefed-up car and he has an assistant named Kato.

Mighty Mouse

Mighty Mouse comes to save the day. Originally called Super Fly, his name was changed to Super Mouse and his costume was very similar to that of Superman, even down to the colors.

In a short time, his name was changed to Mighty Mouse and his costume’s color scheme was changed. Mighty Mouse appeared in comics in 1945 but it is his television series that propelled him into the spotlight.

The Blue Beetle

Over the course of 100 years, three different men from various backgrounds have taken the name and role of the Blue Beetle. Each man made a mark on the character in different ways.

The original Blue Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garrett who got his superpowers from an ancient Scarab found in an Egyptian tomb.

The second Blue Beetle was a man named Ted Kord who had no superpowers at all, he just carried out the legacy of the Blue Beetle with wits, fists and a lot of cool gadgets.

The most recent Blue Beetle is Jamie Reyes, a teenager from El Paso. He was united with the Scarab from the first Blue Beetle and the artifact gave him alien armor.

Ambush Bug

Ambush Bug is a superhero introduced by DC comics in the 1980s. Irwin Schwab is supposedly his real name, but he has a lot of mental problems that prevent him from understanding reality, so his perceived identity might just be a delusion.

Ambush Bug is a well-meaning adventurer who vaguely fights crime but is rather incompetent. His superpowers include dumb luck and teleportation.

Black Widow

Gifted spy Natasha Romanoff is ruthless, efficient and exceptionally skilled, she strikes fear into the hearts of her enemies. And though she once operated on the wrong side of the law, she has overcome her mistakes and has settled on a lifetime of redemption as the Black Widow.
